We visited a community art gallery and had lunch at Duke's, a typical beach lunch spot.

This was growing near the Harmony post office. I'll have to try sketching it.

Harmony

There wasn't much in this town--mainly a post office, a farm, and a winery. I tasted wine, paired with chocolates and bought the Raspberry Pino Noir chocolate sauce as a gift. I wished they had had more than one bottle of that.

There is a burned barn on the property, but they have big plans for it. I enjoyed the hand-drawn map.

This house has a cigarette machine mounted on it's fence! No wonder they all smoke--how convenient to just walk out your door when you run out. These machines were all over.

Achat Hotel

This hotel was very comfortable--well insulated. (The leaning chimney is an optical allusion.) I had to ask and learned that it had once been a slaughterhouse.

The Klingspor had an extire exhibit devoted to Hermann Hesse and his watercolors, typography and books. The walls had a very interesting pictorial biography. I wished I could have understood all the text that went with it.

I visited the Klingspor with the intent of viewing the calligraphic collections. Unfortunately, I heard from the docent, who didn't speak a work of English, "Das biblioteca ist glossen.". Those words were close enough to Dutch, and I got the message that all the calligraphy is housed in the library, which is only open Tues-Fri. Oh well, I had a nice time visiting Offenbach.

Hermann Hesse Journal

I love his neet writing and the way he wrote around the pictures. His background in typographic design is very evident.

The class

Here we are posing at the end of class. That's Janet in the middle, to the left of Susan.

We had a great time, sketching and making our own journals and just hanging out together.

Lefty sketching

Love those benches and that Lefty!

He's a great sport--the only man in this class. I will say though, that while we went sketching in the shops and cafe, he went to the sports bar and admitted to doing no sketching.

Fiscalini ranch is a green space with a path for walking and rustic benches for resting. Very popular for the resident's daily walks. We sat and sketched.

The "Van Gogh"

The cabins were wonderfully painted with an artist theme. Susan stayed in the Van Gogh. Chris, Barb, Pat, her friend, and I stayed in the Da Vinci

Cambria Journaling Workshop

4 women from the Orange County Society for Calligraphy, Chris Ewen, Barb Steel, Susan McNally and I, carpooled in Barb's luxurious van to beautiful Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria for Janet Takahashi's workshop. Patricia Parker and her friend drove up together in another car. Kingsley Benefield and Lorraine Brown came up from San Diego. When we arrived, we were greated with this spectacular view from the deck, which we enjoyed with a wonderful spread of wine and cheese.

There were quite a few buildings in town. This one shows the Fritschi family, who ran this restaurant, in scary incarnations.

Unfortunately, by the time I got done with the boat tour at 4pm, the stores were closed (!). I had a couple hours, so I walked around and looked at the sites recommended in the walking tour in Rick Steve's guidebook. Then I looked in the shop windows. Some of interesting, rather unique shops down little side streets.

I took the 90 minute boat tour of Lake Luzerne. I won't post all of the photos, but some were pretty gorgeous.

Lion Monument - Luzern

Enlarge to see the Lions' tears. He represents Switzerland and is carved out of natural rock in memory of the heroic deaths of the Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries in 1792. They went to aid of France and were slaughtered by the enemy. The lion is slowly dying, due to the broken sword embedded in his side. Mark Twain described the Lion of Lucerne as the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.

April - Utrecht Cake with Dutch writing

We went here back in April, but Heidi just sent the photo to me. This shop was full of beautiful cakes, but we only got a photo of the one with writing. There were others with polka dots, stripes, swirls, flowers. There were lots of spectacular creations there--I wish we had a snapshot with all of those.
